Kim Jong Un

Kim Jong Un has led North Korea since the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, in December 2011, making him the third member of the Kim family to rule the country since its founding in 1948. His grandfather Kim Il Sung established the state's founding ideology of Juche (self-reliance), which the family has used ever since to justify absolute, unchallenged authority. North Korea holds no free elections, permits no independent press, and operates an extensive system of political prison camps documented by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, whose 2014 Commission of Inquiry concluded that crimes against humanity were being committed at the state's direction.

Under Kim, North Korea has accelerated its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs despite extensive international sanctions, while maintaining near-total information control over its roughly 26 million citizens. Kim has increasingly positioned his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, in public appearances alongside him, fueling speculation about a possible fourth-generation succession within the dynasty.
